Kingdom Hearts (My Way)

Chapter 2

“Agh!!” Sora said as he fell down in the sand.  “I can’t believe I was beaten by a GIRL!!” he whined.

“Oh… shuddap… crybaby…” Riku gasped between each breath.

I smiled in victory of the race, but I stopped smiling when I saw Riku.  He must have been exhausted.  He may have been faster than Sora, but he tried his hardest to beat me.

“Riku…  You okay?” I asked and put a hand on his shoulder.

“Er…  Yeah…  Just a little tired.”  Riku said as he looked up at me.

I looked deep into Riku’s bright blue eyes.  So beautiful, and yet… they held a secret that I did not know about.  He hid it from everyone.  But what was it?  As I stared into his eyes, he stared back into my brown ones.

“Hey!!  I could use a little help here!!”

Our gaze broke.  We all looked over to see Kairi stumbling over to us.  It was clear that she was having trouble getting the logs here.  Riku and I instantly rushed over to help.  I could see that the log that I got was too much for her.  I pulled it off of the ankle it was crushing as Riku took his log from her arms.

     “I knew I should’ve gotten a smaller one…” I muttered as I tossed the log aside.

Kairi hobbled away from us and towards Sora.  She seemed to stumble and start to fall, but before Riku caught up to her, Sora grabbed her.

“You okay?” Sora asked in concern.

“Yeah… prolly just need a little rest…” Kairi said.  “Can you lead me to the paopu tree?”

“Alright…” Sora said and slowly helped her towards it.

Minutes later, we were all either under, next to, or in the paopu tree.  I was the one up in the tree.  Riku was standing next to it, as Sora and Kairi were sitting under it.  I reached up to pick one of the yellow star-shaped fruits from the tree.

“You know, there’s a legend that goes with the fruit.” Riku said to me without looking up.  He was looking out at the ocean, with who-knows-what was on his mind.

“There is?” I said out of curiosity.

“Yeah, legend says that if two people share a paopu fruit, their destinies become intertwined and they will always be a part of each other’s lives forever, no matter what.” Riku said with no emotion in his voice.

I stared down at the yellow fruit in my hand.  “Is it… true?”

“It’s just a legend.  I don’t believe it.” Riku said, still emotionless.

I smiled.  I believed it.  I broke the fruit into two pieces.  “Hey Riku, catch!” I said and tossed one half to him.

“Wha—?” Riku said and caught it.

     “Share one with me.”

     “Why?”

     “Please?”

     “No…”

“Come on, what could it hurt?  You said you didn’t believe the legend.” I teased.

“Fine… maybe I do…” Riku pouted.  “But if I’m going to share one with someone, it’s certainly not going to be you.”

I dropped my piece.  There was no way in the world he could have just said that to me.  “W-what?”

“I said if I’m going to share it with someone, I’m not sharing it with you.” Riku said, still with no emotion in his voice.

There was a minute of silence.  Finally, what he said registered into one of our heads.

     “Riku!!” Kairi scolded.

“What??” Riku snapped at Kairi.  Then he looked up at me.

I clenched my fist and punched a branch.  I just couldn’t believe it.  Did Riku actually say that to me??  What he was implying by that was that he didn’t like me.

“Fine then…” I said and then jumped out of the tree.  “I challenge you.  If I win, you have to share a paopu fruit with me.  If you win, then you don’t have to.”

     “Okay, I accept.” Riku said.

I walked around the tree to get the wooden pole I had hidden there.  Lucky I also hid Riku’s spare wooden sword back here too.  I grabbed it and threw it at him.  He grabbed it before it could hit him in the face.

     “Watch it!” he said.

I glared at him.  Boy, was he ever going to get it.
